Can Public Speaking Improve Productivity?

What kills productivity? That was the theme posed by first time toastmaster of the day, Fernando. Procrastination and your health are two variables which can as we heard during table topics.

Getting us going during the warmup was past president Tony, who had us singing in unison “I’m exactly where I need to be right now!”, Is this the start of a toastmaster’s choir? We had three guests join and take part in our meeting. Issac from Malvern speakers was our Grammarian, and introduced the word of the day, “dazzling”. Most people shone to this challenge, using the word several times throughout the evening.

A lack of resilience can kill productivity. The first speaker of the day was Julie, was a speech entitled “Why Change?”. This was a story of triumph over adversity, having been told she was too old to be president, Julie described how she went on to prove her detractors wrong by significantly increasing membership during her presidential year.

“Imagine your audience nak ed!”, that was the title of our second speech by guest Shirley. Shirley had given this taken at the weekend during the district competition. She didn’t win at the weekend but won our hearts tonight with this delightful and humorous speech. If you strip people bare of their pomp and glory, that will enable you to get over any inferiority complex you may have. Then by putting on a garment of self-belief that you are able, you will be amazed at what you can achieve.

Steve, our third quest, evaluated Shirley. Commanding her vocal variation, body language and speech structure, Steve also gave valuable feedback relating to speech pace.

Keeping us on time, with new changing background was Michaela, all speakers taking part in table topics hit the 1 minute minimum.

Issac and Steve from Malvern Speakers are trying to visit 30 Toastmasters clubs before June, we were number 19. They are doing this in aid of charity,, any donations would be greatly appreciated by them.

As we approach the end of the toastmasters year, it is time to elect a new committee, all roles, President, VPE, treasurer, VPM are available. If you would like to do one of these roles, or want more information, please contact Tony Anaka.
